Swaying Sweethearts

Even the cold wind of Thursday night couldn’t keep seniors from attending Newton Recreation’s annual Sweetheart Dance. Around 50 men and women came from various counties to enjoy a night of fellowship and fun.

Dressed in shades of red, pink and purple, they gathered around decorative tables embellished with traditional paper hearts and roses.

Fire engulfs Maiden HVAC business

Rolling smoke could be seen miles away along Hwy. 321 Business at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday when a Maiden business caught fire.

Johnny On The Spot Heating and Cooling, on Cemetery Street, was engulfed in flames when firefighters from Maiden, North 321 and Newton departments arrived.

The same goes for Maiden Cheerleading Coach Debbie Moose. However, her cheer squad also makes its way onto her list of loved ones.

Catawba County Schools, Newton-Conover City Schools and Hickory Public Schools will release two hours early on Monday, Feb. 16 due to the forecast of inclement weather as early as 3 p.m.

Newton-Conover City Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 17 due to the forecast of inclement weather.

Meals on Wheels seeks volunteers

"We consider our volunteers to be doing more than just delivering meals – they're also checking in on people and making sure that they're doing okay," said Catawba County's Adult Services Supervisor for Senior Nutrition Services Jan Shaffer.

Catawba County Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers.

Hickory's Peterson claims two state championships

Hickory’s Emmaline Peterson experienced success early in her high school swimming career, winning a state title last year as a freshman.

The Red Tornadoes sophomore repeated her performance Thursday during the 3A state championship meet in Raleigh, winning the 500-yard freestyle event again while adding a state title in the 200-yard freestyle.

LR baseball program is off to best start since 1996

Entering this season, the Lenoir-Rhyne baseball program had an overall losing record in its 84-year history — 1,175 wins, 1,179 losses and seven ties.
