Johnny Clarence Saunders 67 of Newton died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Saunders family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service, 828-465-2111

Rev. Charles Mack Pace, age 65, of Stanley passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mother charged in 4-year-old’s drowning

4-year-old Logan Putnam was swimming with friends in Lake Hickory on May 24 when he was left underwater for 10 minutes, officials said. Putnam died the following Monday as a result of the incident.

Anderson convicted of Obstruction of Justice

District Attorney James C. Gaither, Jr announces the conviction of April Jean Anderson, 36, of Winston-Salem, NC, for (F) Obstruction of Justice (2 counts) after a two day trial in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court this week. The jury deliberated for approximately two hours prior to returning the verdicts of guilty as charged.

Weekend of Fun in Newton

Downtown Newton will be busy this weekend with the final 'Movies in the Park' and a Cruisin’ Newton car show.

The movie will be “Despicable Me 2” and be shown at Southside Park Friday evening. The movie event and popcorn is sponsored by Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet and the arts and crafts for the children before the movie will be provided by Vertical Church in Newton.

Hornets aim for championship repeat in 35th season

In the team’s 35th season, the Catawba County Hornets aim to do something no other team in the Central Carolinas Football League has ever done — repeat.

The Hornets are coming off a championship season in the CCFL.

The team’s returning players were presented with their title rings on Thursday during practice.

Hornets dominate Pelicans, 104-75, to advance

After starting off the NBA Summer League with three losses in three games, the Charlotte Hornets are on a roll.

The Hornets defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 104-75, in the second round of the Summer League tournament on Thursday.

The victory by Charlotte follows up a 82-81 first-round victory against the Dallas Mavericks behind Roberto Nelson's 3-point buzzer beater.
