Paul Henry Winebarger 97 of Conover died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Winebarger family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service, 828-465-2111.

Charlene Travis Stine, age 87, of Conover, died July, 18, 2014. The Stine family has entrusted arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton, NC.

County library seeks crowd-funding for community garden

The Catawba County Library is engaging the community to raise more money to better “seed” its new garden at the main library in Newton. Partnering with Citizinvestor, a crowd-funding and civic engagement platform, the project seeks local residents willing to invest in the community garden.

Hornets top Colts in league opener, 14-6

In a game that included five ejections, the Catawba County Hornets defeated the rival Carolina Colts 14-6 on Saturday.

The contest was a rematch of last year's Central Carolinas Football League (CCFL) championship game — which was also played at Westside/Jaycee Park in Newton.

Newton’s Nutcracker Prince earns scholarship to Nashville

A very gifted student from the NewArt School of Ballet, Ben Cunningham, will be joining the company at Nashville Ballet in August.

Cunningham began his training with NewArt School of Ballet in 2013. He came to NASB as an actor with a desire to improve his dancing and very quickly got hooked on ballet. Melissa and Michael French, who head the NASB, could tell Cunningham was very gifted.

Rockets end Hornets' run in Las Vegas, 83-79

The Charlotte Hornets run at the NBA Summer League championship is over.

Behind 25 points from Isaiah Canaan, the Houston Rockets ousted the Hornets, 83-79, in the semifinals of the Summer League tournament in Las Vegas.

Rookie P.J. Hairston led Charlotte (3-4) with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds, while Josh Davis added 18 points and 14 rebounds.
