DA pushing for death penalty, warrants unsealed

The alleged murderer of Newton counselor Maggie Daniels might face the death penalty if found guilty.

Daniels body was found in her residence at Windsor Apartments on June 28. Sharman Odom was indicted by a grand jury on Aug. 18 and faces first-degree murder, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree kidnapping charges.

Johnson, 49ers open second season with 33-9 win

BUIES CREEK — Matt Johnson and the Charlotte 49ers football team kicked off their second-ever campaign with a 33-9 victory on the road Thursday night against Campbell.

Johnson completed 14-of-30 passes for 189 yards in the contest for the Niners (1-0).

Lala Lee Weathers Hedgepath Young, age 97, of Newton passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Young family.

Betty Ann Philyaw 75 of Maiden died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Sherrills Ford Hospice House. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Justice Center Expansion Underway

Work on the Catawba County Justice and Public Safety Center project is progressing and may be more obvious to those passing by or visiting the campus as construction of a new parking deck has begun.

A touch of Grace

After a long summer away from campus, Lenoir-Rhyne University students returned to bring the Hickory campus back to life.

Standing tall in the heart of LR’s campus is a structure new to this year’s students — Grace Chapel.

Samuel Biggerstaff, 7, of Vale, twisted the ribbon of his red balloon in anticipation as he tried his best to sit still on the picnic table at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds. Samuel’s balloon was free for playing a skee ball game at the annual American Legion Fair in Hickory.

“Even though I only scored 90 points and you needed 200 to win, it was fun,” he said.
