Fire guts Lake Norman home

A large fire destroyed a 3,000-square-foot home on Peninsula Lane in the Sherrills Ford area of Catawba County just before 11 a.m. on Friday.

First units on the scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, according to Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue Chief Rick Davis.

Logano gives Penske his second Daytona 500 win

Soaked in booze but drinking a Coke, Joey Logano fretted over how he and his new bride would celebrate his most significant victory.

"I don't know how to party," the 24-year-old said with a sheepish grin.

Winning the Daytona 500 will provide him the ultimate chance to unleash.

Hope wins state title; Red Devils are 2A runners-up

Newton-Conover's Ah'Ron Hope won a state title at 285 pounds on Saturday at the NCHSAA Individual State Wrestling tournament held in Greensboro, helping the Red Devils finish as state runners-up at the event.

PREP BASKETBALL: Playoff brackets are released

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has released its preliminary brackets for the state 2A and 3A basketball playoffs.

Below is a look at those brackets, which are currently being worked on or finalized:

2A boys brackets
No. 32 Bunker Hill (11-11) at No. 1 Smoky Mountain (22-0)
No. 25 Lincolnton (16-6) at No. 8 Parkwood (12-10)

After one day of the 2A and 3A individual state wrestling tournament in Greensboro, there are eight Catawba County wrestlers still with hopes of winning a state crown.

NASCAR suspends driver Kurt Busch indefinitely

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In a stunning move just two days before the season-opening Daytona 500, NASCAR suspended Kurt Busch indefinitely on Friday after a judge said the former champion almost surely strangled and beat an ex-girlfriend last fall and there was a "substantial likelihood" of more domestic violence from him in the future.

Future Catawba Valley Classic plans are finalized

Finalizing its 28th annual event, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Catawba Valley Classic committee set its sights on the event’s future on Friday.

Eight area high schools were presented checks, which each totaled a record $3,262.11, from their participation from the annual prep basketball tournament held in late December 2014.

Former Hickory standout eclipses 1,000 points at ECU

Former Hickory basketball standout Jada Payne reached an important career milestone on Wednesday.

The redshirt junior at East Carolina recorded her 1,000th career point,helping the Lady Pirates defeat Southern Methodist University, 67-53.

Postal truck hits old post office

The marquee in front of the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton suffered slight damage after a United States postal truck was clipped by a passenger truck on Wednesday afternoon.

The passenger truck, driven by Richard Coleman of Mooresville, was traveling east on E. A Street when he ran a red light, according to police reports. Coleman’s truck clipped the rear of the postal truck.
