Hunter Harvey returns to Catawba County an All-Star

Before a jam-packed crowd of 3,753 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium, Hunter Harvey made his long-awaited return home to Catawba County.

The Bandys grad and current Delmarva Shorebirds pitcher allowed one hit, one walk and no runs in his one-inning starting appearance at the 2014 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

North, South play into extras; Game ends in 4-4 tie

There was no champion in the 2014 South Atlantic League All-Star Game at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday.

Playing into the 10th inning, the North and South All-Stars finished tied 4-4 in the contest.

John W. Caldwell, Jr., 89, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 13, 2014. The Caldwell family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Local philanthropist gives last gift to Claremont

Martha Kline, of Newton, passed away in April 2014, leaving behind a legacy with the Jessup-Kline Hosiery Company.

“She was a genuine person who dedicated her life to the mill,” said Doug Barrick, city manager of Claremont. “Even after it closed, she would go the mill to do her work.”

Hunter Harvey takes the All-Star spotlight tonight

He watched his brother Kris pitch at L.P. Frans Stadium when he was a young boy.

He saw his father Bryan coach there, as well.

Now, more than a decade later, Hunter Harvey is the starting pitcher for tonight's South Atlantic League All-Star Game at the historic stadium in Hickory.

Arrest made in rape investigation

Troy Daniel Hamilton, 36, of S. Ashe Ave. Newton, was arrested and charged with felony first degree rape.

The incident was called into police on June 9 at approximately 4:07 a.m. and occurred at 2308 N. Anderson Ave. in Newton, officials said.

Blazing the trail

Catawba County’s new thread trail project is now well underway.

Volunteers have been working on the new half of mile trail segment that will connect Heritage Trail onto Radio Station Road in Newton. With the completion of the segment, it will create a 6.3-mile continuous trail connecting the cities of Newton and Conover.

Citizens of Newton are used to seeing a few familiar faces walking the streets of downtown. Both of Newton's Parking Enforcement officers have worked for the city for more than 20 years.
