Never too old for crayons

A local senior entered his first art competition at age 53 with a drawing done using basically crayons.

Rodney Robbins from Maiden, doesn’t like to paint, and he’s barely picked up a drawing pen in the last 30 years, but he recently entered an art show with a pastel drawing that’s surprisingly lively.

Lady Indians get a second chance at Lady Panthers

Second chances rarely come around in life, but the St. Stephens girls soccer team has just that opportunity tonight against Charlotte Catholic.

After losing 1-0 to the Lady Panthers in last year’s 3A West final, the Lady Indians (20-3-2) will try to avenge that defeat when they host Catholic tonight in Hickory at 6 p.m.

Long-time coaches Morgan, Carpenter enshrined

Two long-time area wrestling coaches were honored by the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Former Catawba County wrestling coaches Steve Morgan and Larry Carpenter were presented with Lifetime Service to Wrestling awards.

Bellas honored by Justice Department

Assistant district attorney of N.C.’s 25th Prosecutorial District, Eric Bellas was recognized by the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday, May 15, during the annual National Missing Children’s Day commemoration in Washington, D.C.

The 25th Prosecutorial District includes Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties.

A five-time Sprint Cup champion, Jimmie Johnson can now refer to himself as a four-time All-Star Race winner after Saturday.

The Sprint Cup Series points leader added to another record to his already impressive resumé by claiming his second-straight All-Star Race trophy at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Vikings end Red Devils run in 2A soccer playoffs

The Newton-Conover girls soccer team had its season ended by South Iredell on Saturday evening in Troutman.

The Lady Vikings (21-2) scored three goals and clamped up their defense to come away with the 3-0 shutout in the third meeting between the two schools this season.

Miracle Campbell netted two goals for South Iredell, while Katie Hinerman pocketed the other goal for the Lady Vikings.
