Teen accused of burning neighbor’s property

Jordan Max Hunt, 19, of Chevy Drive in Claremont was arrested for allegedly setting fire to his neighbor’s outbuilding, according to Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid. The fire was found at 1:12 a.m., Reid said.

Sweet Sunrise-Newton church celebrates Easter

At 7:05 a.m. on Sunday the bright morning sun arose over the cemetery at Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton. Though the granite graves were filled with loved ones, followers of Jesus Christ came out in remembrance and rejoicement of an empty tomb.

‘Village’ proposed in Sherrills Ford

Big changes could be on the way for the Sherrills Ford-Terrell community.

At Monday morning’s Catawba County Board of Commissioners’ meeting, an informational presentation was given about the proposed Village at Sherrills Ford planned development, which would bring the “village center” concept to the area on about 200 acres of land around Highway 150 and Slanting Bridge Road.

Comeback! Duke tops Wisconsin for fifth national title

INDIANAPOLIS — Call them freshmen. Please, do not call them kids.

Led by Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor, Duke's talented group of youngsters played like salty old pros down the stretch, outscoring Wisconsin by 14 points over the final 13 minutes Monday night to grit out a 68-63 victory for the program's fifth national title.

Robert William Stephen Romska, 32, of Startown Road in Newton was arrested on Thursday by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
