Conover police are ‘Champions’

Chief Steve Brewer and the Conover Police Department were recognized on Tuesday during the 12th Annual Greater Hickory Kia Classic Media Day.

Brewer and his department were presented with the Champions Award for their service during the tournament’s 12 years.

May robbery suspect arrested

On Thursday, May 8 at approximately 11:30 p.m. the Kangaroo convenience store at 334 20th Street, Newton was robbed. Monday, the first suspect was identified and arrested.

Brandon Keith Dunning, 29, of 721 West C Street, Newton was arrested and charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to Newton police.

If you’ve driven down North College Avenue, you’ve seen his name. It’s plastered along the small commercial space right next to Callahan’s Café.

The sign on the front of the building reads “Ed Ide” in large, black, bold letters. Ide is running for Catawba County Commissioner as a write-in candidate, and the spot with the sign is his headquarters.

'Gentleman's champion:' Allen set to defend title

Michael Allen was described as a “gentleman’s champion” at Tuesday’s Greater Hickory Kia Classic Media Day.

In a little more than a month, Allen will defend his GHKC championship during the tournament’s 12th annual event.

Red Devils rise one spot to No. 9 in latest AP poll

The Newton-Conover football team moved up one spot in this week’s Associated Press prep football poll.

The Red Devils, who were ranked 10th in the first poll of the season last week, received a total of 33 votes this week to jump to No. 9.

Bobby Joe Evans Jr. 54 of Conover died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Frye Regional Medical Center. The Evans family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service of Conover, 828-465-2111.

Paul Heyward Allison, III, age 48, of Conover passed away Friday, September 5, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Allison family.

Startown Lockdown

A student at Startown Elementary spotted two men walking down the road carrying guns on Monday afternoon and alerted his teacher, according to Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.

The school contacted Newton Police and followed procedure to remain under lockdown while police officers searched the area with assistance from Sheriff’s deputies.
