On the clock-Shuford holds annual Career Day

Local professionals from Conover and the surrounding areas volunteered to participate in Shuford Elementary School’s two-day Career Day this week.

On Tuesday, kindergarten, fourth and fifth grade students rotated through various stations both inside and outside the school to get a hands-on look at jobs they could pursue in the future.

Streetscape plan hits phase two

“We’ve been working on the Streetscape Plan for at least 10 years,” said City of Newton Mayor Anne Stedman. “This council decided to make that plan into a reality.”

The Newton Streetscape Plan is underway. The first phase of the Streetscape began with the first official Streetscape Plan meeting on Jan. 12 – starting the introduction of specific strategies for redevelopment in Newton.

Red Devils outlast obstacles, Wolves in 3-1 victory

Jessica Hayes picked an interesting game to return to the soccer field for Newton-Conover.

In a contest that included a coach being dismissed from the field, four goals and an injury, the Lady Red Devils prevailed past Lincolnton 3-1 at Gurley Stadium.

It was the first game back for Hayes since injuring her toe during last year’s 2A West Region final against West Stokes.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Germanwings Flight 9525 Crashes in French Alps With 150 People Onboard

An Airbus with 150 people onboard crashed in the southern French Alps on Tuesday, officials said. The A320, operated by Lufthansa’s budget airline Germanwings, was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and went down in the Digne region of the Alps-De-Haute Province, according to Reuters. There were 144 passengers, two pilots and four crew members, Germanwings said.

Newton resident sells comic on AMC TV show

When he was 8 years old, Joshua Cummings strolled into the Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find comic store, which was previously in Hickory’s Valley Hills Mall.

“I just walked in one day because it seemed cool,” Cummings said. “I never really stopped collecting because of the love of my childhood.”

Newton-Conover Rotary reads at South Newton

Eleven members of the Newton-Conover Rotary Club participated in a special reading on Friday, March 20 at South Newton Elementary School

The Rotary Club helped the students participate in “Reading Across America,” an initiative by the National Education Association (NEA). This is the 15th year N-C Rotary Club has participated in what is billed as the nation’s largest readying party.

Charges filed in Newton dog bite case

On the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 22, two brothers – one 10 years old and the other 6 – were “attacked and mauled” by two Rottweiler dogs in the front yard of a home on North Gaither Avenue in Newton, according to Newton Police.

The children were in the care of their mothers boyfriend, Christopher Aaron Amell, 40.

Last week we gave you a preview of the tournament and some predictions of teams that we felt could make a run to the Final 4. Well, those predictions were way off and the bracket this writer submitted to his friends and a couple websites sits in about 10 millionth place. All the wise guys were talking about Iowa State and Virginia. Those teams won a combined 1 game.
