Newton man guilty of 46 sexual offenses

A Newton man was sentenced to no less than 160 years of prison time for multiple sexual offenses spanning more than a decade.

Sunset Drive fire torches porch

March 4, 2015

Conover Fire Department responded to a house fire on Sunset Drive just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The fire started on the front porch of the residence, according to Chief Mark Hinson, and resulted in no injuries.

“It was a small house fire there,” Hinson said. “We had it under control in about 15 minutes.”

Chief: Man was cutting fuel tank at time of blast

Officials said a man was cutting the end of “an old fuel tank” when an explosion blew through the outbuilding he was working in at 3986 N.C. Highway 16 North on Monday afternoon.

The man suffered burns to 80 percent of his body and was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital following the incident. Officials had no update on his condition Tuesday.

Trojans rally, reach sixth-straight West Regional

Down 10 points at halftime to visiting Madison, the Bandys girls basketball team wouldn’t be denied.

Powered by Kendyl Medlin’s 19 points, the Lady Trojans won 65-60 to advance to their sixth-straight 2A West Regional.

The victory for Bandys is its 64th in a row at Bost-Matheson Gymnasium. The team’s last home loss took place Jan. 25, 2011 against Newton-Conover.

Empty Bowls, Full Hearts

On Saturday, the cafeteria at Saint Stephens High School will be filled with people making a difference.

The 9th annual Empty Bowls, Full Heart event will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, utilizing the creative talents of students, staff and the community to raise money for local soup kitchens and overall hunger awareness.

‘Loud boom’ shakes Conover

Brenda Trivette was unloading groceries outside her home on Angel Road in Conover when she heard the explosion.

“All I heard was a loud boom and then I felt the ground shake,” Trivette said. “I actually dropped my bag. Then I turned around and all I could see was black smoke coming from behind the trees.”

Surratts combine for 54 points, end Devils’ season

East Lincoln’s 1-2 punch K’Oed Newton-Conover on Monday night, ending the Red Devils’ boys basketball season in the second of the 2A playoffs.

Brothers Chazz and Sage Surratt combined for 54 of the Mustangs’ points in a 75-66 victory in Denver.
