A partnership between Catawba County, Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, Catawba Valley Community College, Lenoir-Rhyne University and area businesses has landed three local entrepreneurs with large checks to cash for their business start-ups based out of the Unifour area.
Fighting back from a first-half deficit against Lincoln Charter, the Newton-Conover girls basketball team came within inches of potentially winning its opener against the Lady Eagles on Wednesday.
At the buzzer, the Lady Red Devilsâ€™ Jalyn Ramseur made a game-tying jumper, which was originally ruled a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

Elbon Eugene Eckard, age 72, of Conover went to his heavenly home Friday, November 14, 2014. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Eckard family.
Alma Inez Reitzel Hefner, 93, of Hickory, NC, passed away, Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Drum Funeral Home in Hickory is honored to be serving the Hefner family.
Evelyn Ledford Barlowe, age 79, of Conover passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Brian Center- East in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Barlowe family.
On Nov. 8, against the backdrop of a decorated military transport truck and equipment trailer, the Small Town Main Street-Veterans Garden of Honor (STMS-VGH) Committee hosted its official Groundbreaking Ceremony for a garden tribute to be built in the Town of Catawba to honor military Veterans and their families.
James Luttonâ€™s face lit up with excitement when he saw the shiny, red mechanical hand that had been made just for him. Once he was all strapped in, six-year-old James was able to do something he had never been able to do - pick things up with his left hand.

Carlene Joan Martin Houk, 52, of Maiden passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at her residence. She was born January 23, 1962 Guilford Co. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Houk Family.
