BREAKING: Foard basketball, wrestling postponed

January 27, 2015

A pair of athletic events in Catawba County have been postponed Tuesday.

The Fred T. Foard at Watauga wrestling match, as well as the Watauga at Fred T. Foard basketball games have been postponed. They will be made up on Wednesday.

Cora Cowles Gaither Shook, age 24 of Newton, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, NC. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton, NC is honored to serve the Gaither family.

Eunice Estelle Arndt Bumgarner, loving mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, passed away at Trinity Village Saturday, January 24, 2015.

CAPC names new director

The Board of the Children's Advocacy and Protection Center of Catawba County has announced the hiring of Nancy Hughes as the agency's new executive director.

The public is invited to meet the new director at a reception to be held at 3-5 p.m. Feb. 12 at the CAPC, located at 1007 First Ave. South, Conover.

Startown P.E. Club

A troop of students from Startown Elementary, donning their bright, Tiger-orange gear, strolled into Abernethy Laurels on Friday morning for their first performance of the school year.

The students, members of the Startown P.E. Club, brought with them jump ropes of all sizes, pogo sticks and even unicycles.

Blaze burns Claremont business

A 50-year staple in the Claremont community stands charred after a weekend fire.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, officials responded to Claremont Hardware and Farm Supply to find the building ablaze.

BREAKING: Wittenberg named Hickory football coach

The Hickory Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday night to hire Allen Robinson Wittenberg as the head football coach at Hickory High School.

Wittenberg, 41, a native of Hickory and a graduate of Hickory High, will start his new role at HHS before the end of February 2015.

N-CHS grad has Red Hawks back in national spotlight

Taking over the Catawba Valley Community College women’s basketball program from retiring head coach Tommy Edwards in 2013, Tisha England had some big shoes to fill.

Now, the Newton-Conover High alumni has the Lady Red Hawks soaring high on the court and hopes to take them to new heights before season’s end.

Sent off in style: Red Devils win in Ramseur's finale

Knowing it would be the final game for teammate Josh Ramseur, Alex Johnson put in the extra work in practice this week in preparation for West Caldwell.

Johnson’s work ethic showed on Friday, and the junior scored 26 points in a 85-77 victory for Newton-Conover against the Warriors at Lemon Gym.

Catawba County welcomes new Cooperative Extension

January 23, 2015

Dr. George Place II, 40, has been named Catawba County's new Cooperative Extension Director.

Place is originally from Kansas City, Mo., where he studied at the University of Missouri at Kansas City towards his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Plant Biological Studies and a Chemistry minor. Place then completed his studies and earned his degree from the University of New Mexico.
