Nhia Chou Vang, 68 of Hickory died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Burial will follow Monday, March 10, 2014 at Southside Cemetery in Newton.

Meet the Single Stream Recycling Machine

Within the city of Conover lies a sleeping giant that’s ready to be awakened.

Since October 2013, the Republic Recycling Service in Conover has been recently building what they call a Single Stream Machine.

The machine itself stands as tall as the recycling facility it’s stored in.

Charles Richard Medlin Sr. “Big M”, age 65, of Newton, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Brian Center East in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Medlin family.

Martha Pope Carpenter, 93, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. The Carpenter family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Trojans win 30th, advance to West Region final

Behind Haleigh Lackey’s 18 points, the Bandys girls basketball team won its 30th game of the season on Tuesday, advancing to the 2A Western Regional final at UNC-Greensboro.

Bandys defeated East Davidson, 62-42, to earn the right to play Franklin (24-3) in Saturday’s noon 2A West title contest at UNC-Greensboro’s Fleming Gym.

Conover Fire Department grant approved

Conover Fire Department will soon start the hiring process for three new full-time positions made available by a SAFER grant awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Department of Homeland Security.

Conover City Council approved this grant and the addition of these positions at their Monday night meeting.

Lady Trojans look for 30th victory versus Lady Eagles

For 29 straight games, the Bandys girls basketball team has been invincible.

Tonight, the Lady Trojans will try to add win No. 30 against by far its toughest test this season.

Bandys (29-0) faces East Davidson (24-3) tonight at Fleming Gymnasium on the campus of UNC-Greensboro for a chance to advance to the 2A Western Regional final on Saturday.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released the start times for the 2A and 3A Regionals, featuring the Bandys and Hickory high school girls basketball teams.
