Kenneth Steve Helms,age 63 of Lincolnton,passed away Sunday, July
20, 2014 at his residence. Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Westside House of Prayer in Vale.

Angeline Thornhill Widener, age 82, of Lincolnton,passed away Saturday,
July 19, 2014 at Presbyterian Main in Charlotte. The interment will be at Spirit of Life Church of God.

2 Pink Magnolias on the move

The former Epps building in downtown Newton will soon be home to a mother-daughter run gift store and boutique.

Rebecca and Jennifer Stiver will be relocating their store, 2 Pink Magnolias, from 200 North Main Ave. to the former Epps building on North College Avenue.

Commissioners ‘vote for jobs’

This statement echoed in the 1924 Courthouse over and over Monday night as concerned citizens of the Startown community voiced their opinions on the proposed 1764 Business Park, but the Catawba County Board of Commissioners didn’t seem to agree.

West tops East in Madi Story's final prep game

Madi Story went out a winner Monday night during the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star basketball game in Greensboro.

Story scored four points and grabbed five rebounds, leading the West to a 82-68 victory against the East in the exhibition contest.

Paul Henry Winebarger 97 of Conover died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Winebarger family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service, 828-465-2111.

Charlene Travis Stine, age 87, of Conover, died July, 18, 2014. The Stine family has entrusted arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton, NC.

County library seeks crowd-funding for community garden

The Catawba County Library is engaging the community to raise more money to better “seed” its new garden at the main library in Newton. Partnering with Citizinvestor, a crowd-funding and civic engagement platform, the project seeks local residents willing to invest in the community garden.

Hornets top Colts in league opener, 14-6

In a game that included five ejections, the Catawba County Hornets defeated the rival Carolina Colts 14-6 on Saturday.

The contest was a rematch of last year's Central Carolinas Football League (CCFL) championship game — which was also played at Westside/Jaycee Park in Newton.

Former Tar Heel Marvin Williams returns to his roots
