No. 17 Maiden (11-6) at No. 16 East Burke (17-5), 4 p.m.
No. 20 West Davidson (7-15) at No. 13 Newton-Conover (13-6), 11 a.m.
No. 24 Bandys (10-8) at No. 8 Bunker Hill (14-6), 2 p.m.

Carolyn Ervin Grindstaff 78 of Newton died Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at her residence. The Grindstaff family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service of Conover, 828-465-2111.

Ivey “Louise” Welch Rinck, 82, of Lincolnton passed away Monday, October 13, 2014 at Cardinal Care in Lincolnton. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Rinck Family.

The conditions were perfectly aligned for tornado activity in Catawba County and the surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon. A watch issued in the morning had everyone, including local schools, on high alert for the day.

Luckadoo to take seat on School Board

Tommy Luckadoo, Vice President of Adams Commercial Real Estate services, hopes to take on another role as a member of the Catawba County School Board.

Luckadoo, 51, grew up in Forest City N.C. where he graduated from East Rutherford High School in 1981. Luckadoo moved to Hickory in 1989 to continue working for as the District Director for Congressman Cass Ballenger.

Mike Helms has resigned as the head coach of the Hickory High School football team.

Dr. Walter Hart, superintendent of Hickory Public Schools, released a statement Wednesday at 3:16 p.m. about Helm’s status as Hickory High football coach.

Bunker Hill wins second-straight tournament title

October 15, 2014

A year to the day it won last year’s Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tournament title, the Bunker Hill volleyball team made lightning strike twice on Wednesday.

The Lady Bears came out of the gate strong in a 3-1 win against rival Newton-Conover in the tournament final held at West Caldwell High School.

Boyles wins fourth title, Bandys boys three-peat

Corbin Boyles finished his undefeated streak in conference championship meets on Wednesday.

The Maiden senior won his fourth-straight conference championship at Wednesday’s SD-7 Cross-Country title meet at Southside Park in Newton.

The Bandys boys cross-country team won its fourth-straight team title, led by fourth-place finisher Yates Goodson.
