Growing Greatness

Melissa Early is not your typical young adult. While other young women seem to be interested in celebrity gossip, the latest fashion trends and exercising to wear them, she is trying to stand apart. Early would rather put on a pair of overalls, get into the dirt, and grow something useful. Her goal is to produce healthy vegetables and inspire other young people to do so also.

Candidates Forum

A group of candidates running for different positions in North Carolina gathered at the Newton--Conover Auditorium on Thursday for a Candidates Forum leading up to the 2014 General Election.

Candidates for Catawba County Board of Commissioners Kitty Barnes (R), Randy Ishenhower (R), Sherry Butler (R), Charlotte Williams (D), and write-in candidate Ed Ide were in attendance.

Carroll Lee Day Jr. 56 of Taylorsville died Sunday, October 5th, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He was born September 4th, 1958. The family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony.

For Alec and Justin: Bunker Hill caps an emotional week with 3-0 victory over Maiden

Battling for the chance to win a conference championship, Wednesday’s volleyball game between Bunker Hill and Maiden went far beyond the court of play.

After losing classmates Alec Sigmon and Justin Turner late last week in a tragic car crash, the Lady Bears played with heavy hearts and precise focus in a 3-0 victory against the Lady Blue Devils.

Maiden's Corbin Boyles wins United Way Invitational

Already with county, conference and state championships, Maiden’s Corbin Boyles finally achieved the missing jewel in his cross-country crown Wednesday.

The Blue Devil senior runner won the 22nd United Way Invitational at Southside Park for the first time in his career.

Red Devils win doubles title, are second in singles

Newton-Conover won a doubles championship and finished second in singles play during day two of the SD-7 tennis championships on Wednesday at Maiden High School.

Discovery High School rolled out the red carpet on Monday for a special guest speaker — Pauletta Pearson Washington.

Washington is a Newton native who studied music and built a career in Hollywood as an actress. She is known for her work in “Wilma”, “Beloved”, and “The Watsons Go to Birmingham.” She married Denzel in 1983.
