Death penalty on the table

September 9, 2014

Sharman Odom, accused killer of Maggie Daniels, made a short appearance in court Monday morning where he learned that the death penalty will remain on the table.

Prosecutors said there were two aggravating gactors, making the case a capital case.

Of Odom is convicted a post-trial hearing will decide his sentencing — life in prison or death row.

Graduation rates among top in state

All three Catawba County school systems topped the state average for graduation rates for 2013-14.

Newton-Conover City Schools (NCCS) held the highest percentage in the county with 92.5 percent, well above the state average of 83.8 percent, according to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction data.

Eating local at the Roundtable

It all started when the "Eat, Drink and Be Local" event began three years ago as a promotion for the agriculture department in Catawba County. The event features a week filled with locally grown products and produce, and the meals that restaurants produce by taking advantage of Catawba County's farming.

Two years later, in 2013, Catawba County passed the Farm and Food sustainability plan.

At the back of her classroom, she has a line of ducks that have been given to her by students in her 10 years teaching at Lyle Creek.

Brad Keselowski wins at Richmond; Chase field is set

RICHMOND, Va. — NASCAR's new win-and-in format had the potential to give one driver a shot at a dramatic last-grasp berth into the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

There were 17 drivers who could have raced their way into the Chase by winning Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway, but Brad Keselowski would have nothing to do with a storybook ending.

Matt Johnson and his Charlotte 49er teammates were left with a bad taste in their mouths following a 33-9 season-opening victory against Campbell last week.

"We worked really hard this week," Johnson said. "We weren't really satisfied with the way we played last week, even with the win."
