Flynn Lee Loftin 77 of Maiden died Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Loftin family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service of Conover, 828-465-2111.

Brenda VanHorn Willis 60 of Hickory died Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Brian Center Hickory East. She was born May 3, 1954 in Cleveland County.

Residents at risk for record service scam

Some Catawba County residents have recieved letters about their property information that has Donna Spencer, Register of Deeds, concerned.

The letters, distributed by Record Transfer Services, ask property owners to pay a document fee of $83 to receive their property deeds.

Conover native singing solo at Soldiers

Jonathan Birchfield, a Conover native and Newton-Conover High School alum, will be making his way to Newton to perform at this year's 125 Soldiers Reunion.

Birchfield will open for the Confederate Railroad on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. This will be Birchfield's first time in 25 years that he will be making his way back home for Soldiers Reunion and his first time performing at the event.

Construction is wrapping up with the exception of landscaping and teachers and staff have begun to move into their new building.
