Shely, Tigers reach their first 3A state title game

Experience paid off in a huge way on Tuesday for the Fred T. Foard boys soccer team in its second-straight 3A West Region championship game.

Led by a two-goal performance from Wyatt Shely, the Tigers advanced to their first-ever 3A state title game with a 2-0 win at Weddington.

Pedestrian dead after two-vehicle accident

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, a pedestrian walking down Kool Park Road in Hickory was struck by two vehicles, according to NC Highway Patrol.

When Lawrence Evans, of Newton, was only 17, he fibbed his age to enlist in the Army National Guard. After spending three years with the Guard, Evans enlisted with the Navy alongside his three brothers — Earl, Louis and Kenny.

Evans’ job quickly moved from the sea to the air as he worked with a team of pilots to keep an eye out for enemy submarines.

Red Devils, Tigers soccer players build on past

Coach Jim Caudill predicted the amazing runs made by both the Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard boys soccer teams this postseason.

Caudill, who has coached the Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association’s 96 Blast Blue Premier team for the past six seasons, led a group of young men to the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association’s Kepner President’s State Cup two seasons ago.

Q&A with Jay: ESPN’s Bilas visits Rock Barn

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Hickory Sportsman’s Club on Thursday, ESPN’s Jay Bilas visited Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

Bilas, who played basketball at Duke University and is now an college hoops analyst, spoke during the club’s bi-annual meeting.

Before the meeting, O-N-E Sports Editor Cody Dalton was able to interview Bilas on a number of topics.

Fred T. Foard (21-5-2) at Weddington (22-1-1), 6 p.m.

BREAKING: Red Devils, Tigers advance to West finals

The Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard boys soccer teams are both a game away from playing for a state title.

The Red Devils edged Forbush, and the Tigers slid past Statesville — both by 2-1 scores — to advance to the 2A West Region and 3A West Region championship games.
