Carly Moser, of Claremont, was on her way out the door on Wednesday when she noticed smoke and flames coming from the house across the street. Moser called 9-1-1 at approximately 12:10 and members of Oxford Fire Department, Claremont Fire Department, Catawba Fire Department and Conover Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.
Left with a sour taste in its mouth from last Fridayâ€™s 65-62 home loss to Newton-Conover, the Hickory boys basketball team responded in a big way.

Luncheon at the Newton Recreation Center. The guests are part of the police departmentâ€™s call list to ensure the safety of each senior.
Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, a Renwood Mills employee was airlifted from the parking lot of the Newton Rec Center to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after suffering a fall. According to officals on the scene, the employee was inside the building, located off Brady Ave. in Newton, at the time of the incident and was reported to have fallen one story. Newton Fire Dept.
Both coming off tough tournament competition this past weekend, Newton-Conover and St. Stephens locked up on the wrestling mat on Tuesday in Hickory.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was taken to a hospital Tuesday after being involved in a two-vehicle crash not far from the team's stadium in Charlotte.
