A grand jury in New York ruled Wednesday that three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart won't face charges in the death of Kevin Ward, Jr.
The incident involving Stewart and Ward, Jr. took place on Aug. 9 at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Canandaigua, N.Y.
Tuesday, Sept. 23, was National Voter Registration Day. The State Board of Elections announced that its rolls grew by nearly 1.5 million over the last 10 years, bringing to total to 6.5 million registered voters in N.C. That number represents about 9 out of 10 eligible voters in N.C.
Alvin Loy Arrowood, Sr., age 91, of Hickory passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. He was born September 9, 1923 in Catawba County, Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Arrowood family.
N.C. 16 in Catawba County could make the to-do list for NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) projects in the coming years.

"I came into class that morning expecting to learn horticulture," said Bandys High School Student Travis Goforth, 16. "But instead we learned about a calf being born."
Students in the morning horticulture class spend most of their time learning about plants, but each morning the students take a walk outside to feed the animals used for other agriculture and farming classes.

The Carolina Panthers were dealt yet another blow to their already hampered running back situation on Tuesday.
Fullback Mike Tolbert was placed on the injured reserve/designated for return list, meaning he cannot play until Week 13 of the NFL season when Carolina visits the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite being off last week, the Newton-Conover football team once again moved up in the latest Associated Press prep football poll.
The Red Devils (3-0-1) were tied for sixth place with Franklin (4-1) with 69 total votes.
Newton-Conover also received one first-place vote for the third-straight week.
Southwest Onslow is on top of the 2A poll for the second-straight week.
Eleanor Buff Baxley 79 of Claremont died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Sherrills Ford Hospice House. The Baxley family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service of Conover, 828-465-2111.
Mike McClure, age 64 of Lincolnton, passed away Monday, September 22, 2014 at Levine and Dickson Hospice. E. F. Drum Funeral Home is serving the McClure family.
