Field Trip with Focus

At 10:35 a.m., a Newton Conover City Schools activity bus rolled up to Catawba Valley Community College’s Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC) with smiling students eager to learn about Catawba County industry. Dan St. Louis, president of MSC, and Rodney Sigmon, prototype research and development, held the doors opened as they welcomed students from Newton Conover Middle School’s S.T.E.M.

Red Devils shut out Nighthawks for second state title

Twenty-seven games. Eighteen shutouts. Twelve seniors. One state title.

Newton-Conover capped a 26-1 championship season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against previously unbeaten First Flight at the Dail Soccer Complex on the campus of N.C. State University.

The state championship is the second for the Red Devils’ boy soccer program in seven seasons.

Foard falls in first 3A boys soccer final to Crusaders

Cardinal Gibbons used its previous state championship experience to knock off Fred T. Foard on Saturday in the 3A boys soccer final at the Dail Soccer Complex.

Behind the play of championship game MVP Cooper Deplantis, the Crusaders cruised to a 5-0 victory against the Tigers.

Bears complete unbeaten regular season in football

The Lenoir-Rhyne football team completed its first unbeaten regular season since 1962 on Saturday with a 27-21 victory against Catawba at Moretz Stadium.

It's only the fourth time in school history that the Bears have finished the regular season undefeated (1956, 1960 and 1962) and the first time they've finished 11-0 in the regular season.

Wolves eliminate Red Devils from 2AA playoffs

Darian Roseboro finished where he left off against Newton-Conover in Lincolnton’s home playoff game against the Red Devils.

After rushing for four touchdowns earlier this season in a 51-8 road victory against Newton-Conover, Roseboro added four more touchdowns in a 48-14 2AA playoff win on Friday in Lincolnton.

Roseboro now has 20 touchdowns in his past four contests.

Trojans' season ends at the hands of Hilltoppers

In a close contest, it was a back up quarterback for R-S Central who proved to be the spoiler for Bandys in its playoff opener at Garry Butler Memorial Stadium on Friday.

After quarterback Tyrese Tate was hurt on a late run, back up Trey Clark entered the game, throwing a 59-yard pass on the next play and scored on 1-yard run to help lift the Hilltoppers to a 29-26 victory over the Trojans.

Glenn Lee Deitz, age 90 of Hickory, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at his residence. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is honored to be serving the Deitz family.

In 1873, the creation of the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad began.

Eight years after the tracks of the Kings Mountain Railroad had been destroyed by the Union Army and abandoned, Chester and Lenoir purchased the tracks to rebuild.

Tour of Churches to feature 11 sanctuaries

“We just want to bring the community together and kind of get Christmas started,” said Tour of Churches Committee Chairman Cheryl Ransier.

The Tour of Churches began three years ago.
