Sarah “Sally” Dympna Ballard, 82, died at 1:27 p.m. on September 23, 2014. The Ballard family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover, NC.

Andrew “Andy” Claude Gilleland, 58, died Monday, September 22, 2014 at 5:30 a.m. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Gilleland Family.

Former Harris Teeter due for facelift

Newton city officials confirmed today to the O-N-E that they are negotiating zoning matters with a major mercantile business intending to put up a large retail store at the site of the now-abandoned Harris-Teeter food store on Northwest Boulevard (Hwy. 321-Business) at West 20thStreet.

On Tuesday afternoon, a stadium full of on-lookers braced the rainy, 54 degree weather to show support for nearly 600 Catawba County high school students.

Smells of hot chocolate and popcorn from the concession stand filled the air.

Red Devils score early, late in first half en route to win

September 24, 2014

Newton-Conover battled both West Caldwell and the elements on the soccer field Wednesday.

The Red Devils scored early and late in the first half, pulling ahead en route to a 4-1 conference victory against the Warriors.

Newton-Conover improves to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in conference games this season.

BREAKING: Tony Stewart won't face charges in death

September 24, 2014

A grand jury in New York ruled Wednesday that three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart won't face charges in the death of Kevin Ward, Jr.

The incident involving Stewart and Ward, Jr. took place on Aug. 9 at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Canandaigua, N.Y.

Voter Registration on the rise

Tuesday, Sept. 23, was National Voter Registration Day. The State Board of Elections announced that its rolls grew by nearly 1.5 million over the last 10 years, bringing to total to 6.5 million registered voters in N.C. That number represents about 9 out of 10 eligible voters in N.C.
