Junior Lee Smith, Jr., age 52, of Lincolnton passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014 at CMC-Main. Interment will be at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. Rev. Billy Ramseur will officiate.

Margie Drum Gilbert, age 90, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Manor Care Prestwick in Avon, IN.

QUEST is a before and after school program that has been implemented in all Catawba County elementary schools newly this year.

House destroyed by fire in Maiden

Traffic on Business 321 North in Maiden was detoured Wednesday after a call came into the 911 call center of a working structure fire at 2925 Old Hwy 321 across from GKN Driveline.

A neighbor called in the fire around 10:30 a.m. after seeing fire coming from the back of the house.

The Lichtenwalners — Michael and Patrick — and the Medina-Garcias — Christian and Alonso — are leading the Blue Devils on the pitch this fall, hoping to take the squad to new heights.

Ray Donald Poteat, age 81, of Newton, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is honored to be serving the Poteat family.

Conover Council discusses sewer rehab, audit

A bid for Conover’s Southwest Sewer Rehabilitation Project has been awarded to Iron Mountain Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $1,317,504.61. This amount plus a construction contingency and administration fees brings the project’s allotted total to $1,723,631.

There was a “Chloe” team during the 2013 CCC Hickory, which was just a few months after she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, which is a bone cancer that mostly affects children and adolescents. The tumor was found in her hip in May 2013, and she immediately began chemotherapy and radiation and finished the treatments in March 2014.

Red Devils ranked 10th in first AP poll of the season

After two shutouts to start the season, the Newton-Conover football program was rewarded for its play on Tuesday.

The Red Devils are ranked 10th in the first Associated Press poll of the season, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

The poll is voted on by a statewide panel of prep sports writers.
