N-C defeats Maiden in three sets to tie standings

September 30, 2014

Left with a bitter taste in their mouths from a 3-2 loss Sept. 4 against Maiden, the Newton-Conover volleyball team enacted some revenge on Tuesday night.

The Lady Red Devils never skipped a beat en route to a three-set victory against the Lady Blue Devils.

Red Devils break tie for sixth in latest AP poll

The Newton-Conover football team broke a tie for sixth place in the latest Associated Press prep football poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Red Devils are now in sole possession of No. 6 in the 2A poll after breaking a tie with Franklin, who was one vote behind N-CHS. Newton-Conover once again received one first-place vote in the poll.

The 30th annual Murray’s Mill Harvest Folk Festival took place Saturday through Sunday Sept 27 and 28. Sunshine and warm weather made for an incredible day that could be enjoyed by all. Southern accents and welcoming smiles greeted those who were interested in learning about this region’s rich past.

Peter Wilfong Whitener, Jr., age 68 of Newton, passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at his residence. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is honored to be serving the Whitener family.

“The house has been empty for probably five years now,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s a shame to let something like that go. This is such a nice neighborhood.”

Hwy 55 to open in Conover

Hwy 55 Burgers and Fries, also known as Andy's Burgers and Fries, has been a family business since it began. 23 years ago, in Goldsboro, Kenny Moore started the company after the restaurant chain he was working for closed its doors. The chain built up by franchisees taking on ownership roles and opening locations throughout the state. Moore's son, Andy, still works for the company today.
