‘¿Cómo se dice adventura?’

A few local girls will be tubing down the Amarillo River in a few weeks, after they pack their bags and head to Costa Rica this weekend. The students will become acquainted with the spanish language and most likely the phrase, "¿Cómo se dice?" — which means "How do you say...?"

Butter My Biscuits

Downtown Newtown will be filled with the smell of warm, buttery, southern biscuits on June 5.

Newton is home to Renwood Mills, makers of Southern Biscuit flour, and the company will be sponsoring its annual Southern Biscuit Day on June 5 in the Historic Courthouse Square in downtown Newton, from 7 a.m. until noon.

Ruth Revonda Deitz Arrowood, 91 of Newton died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Conover. The family will receive 2-3 p.m., one hour prior, in the chapel of Jenkins Funeral Home.

Shoua Lor Thao, age 92 passed away May 19, 2014 in MN.Services will conclude on Sunday, June 1, 2014 with burial at Cranberry Cemetery in Newland, NC.

Paparazzi cameras flashed as local celebrities entered the doors of the Tarlton Complex at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).

These celebrities haven't been in movies or television, aren't models for magazines, they are survivors — cancer survivors.

Newton City Council heading home

Newton City Council will be heading back home for their next meeting on Tuesday, June 3.

The Council Chambers for the city of Newton have been renovated for the first time since they were built in 1976.

Marion St. Pierre MacDowell, 89, of Conover, NC died Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Levine Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. The MacDowell family has entrusted arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton, NC.

Dorothy Mae Ray, age 74, of Lincolnton passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. There will be no formal services.

Newton’s Fire Department now pulling double-duty as first responders

The citizens of Newton are now relying on the fire department more than just putting out fires.

The Newton City Council approved back in March for the fire department to be included as a first responder for medical calls within the city limits.

Seniors workout with Silver Sneakers

Seniors in Newton have a new place they can go workout.

The Perfect Workout, located in downtown, was recently accredited as a Healthway Silver Sneaker Fitness location.

"Be careful," Charles Laney, owner of Laney Airport in Maiden, said to James Thomas as he headed towards his home-built aircraft on Sunday.
