Former Trojan selected to World Cup wrestling team

A Bandys High School graduate will compete among the world’s best wrestlers in two weeks.

Daren Burns, a former two-time state champion with the Trojans, was invited by USA Wrestling to compete at the World Cup on the U.S. Greco-Roman National Team in Tehran, Iran on May 15-16.

Keeping the streets tidy in Newton

There are around 20 trash cans scattered across eight city blocks of Newton which are maintained on a weekly basis. But the individuals who are responsible changing out these garbage bags are not employees of Newton's Department of Public Works. In fact, they are not City of Newton employees at all.

These important duties are performed by individuals of RHA Health Services in Newton.

Wreck on N. Main Ave.

A man driving a burgundy sedan was hospitalized after striking a telephone pole on N. Main Ave. just after 10 a.m. on Monday.

The driver, Timothy Dale Cochran, 49, was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with what appeared to be minor injuries and disorientation, according to Newton Police.

Robert “Fred” Hughes, age 80, of Newton passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence. Born February 10, 1934 in Russell Co. Virginia.
Memorials may be made to Greater Faith Baptist Church.
