Gayle Fowler Allen, 71, of Newton, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Allen family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee, 828-465-2111

Carolyn Rae Baker, 70, of Taylorsville, died Monday, March 31, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday April 4, 2014 at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel.

International delegates tour Center in Conover

The Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC) in Conover opened its doors to delegates from 19 different countries on Thursday.

The Americas Competitiveness Tour made its stop in Conover to showcase the innovation and partnerships that are happening under the roof of the MSC.

Hunter Harvey’s Single-A debut is tonight

After being drafted 22nd overall in last year’s Major League Baseball Draft, Hunter Harvey takes the biggest professional stage of his young career tonight.

The former Bandys High standout competes for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds (Md.) in Asheville against the Tourists tonight.

Reigning Teacher of the Year receives gift

A seventh grade language arts teacher at Maiden Middle School, Bethany Settlemyre, was selected as the Catawba County Schools Teacher of the Year for the 2012-13 school year.

She is still being recognized for her achievements.

Whitney Marti and Dan Hummert, of Hickory Mazda Mitsubishi, presented her with an award on Wednesday afternoon.

Victims receive checks from Ponzi scheme

After waiting more than five years since his initial arrest, victims of the J.V. Huffman and Biltmore Financial Group, Inc. Ponzi scheme have finally received their money — part of it, at least.

Joshua Vance “J.V.” Huffman, of Conover, was arrested on Nov. 7, 2008 after scamming close to 500 people out of approximately $25 million with his company.
