Second annual event raises more than $3,000

The sound of a shotgun heard over pouring rain signaled the start of the second annual NC Troopers Footchase 5K and Fun Run in Conover on Saturday.

Nearly 300 participants gathered at the starting line at the new Conover City Park.

From elementary students to adults over 60, the community showed their support for the event which raised money for Catawba Regional Hospice.

With help from a late friend, I found out what matters

Have you ever asked yourself the question: “What really matters?”

This question was posed to me last year by my good friend Kurt Barkley, who passed away Friday after a long battle with cancer.

Kurt was not only a dear friend of mine, but helped photograph countless numbers of athletes in Catawba County for The O-N-E — mostly at St. Stephens High School, where his children attend.

Conover garden center gets a fresh look, new owners

Big ideas are blooming at the newly owned and renovated garden center in Conover.

Blooms, owned by Carmen and David Huffman, is located at 1604 Hwy 16 N. The center, formerly Greenwood Nursery, has been given a fresh coat of paint and filled with new supplies and smiling faces.

Edith Mae Ramseur Greene, age 90, of Charlotte, formerly of Lincolnton, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at CMC University in Charlotte. The interment will follow at Pine Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Rev. Terry Cline will officiate.

Pottery festival returning on Saturday

Fine art will be on display this weekend in Hickory.

The Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival will be held this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hickory Metro Convention Center.
