Conover City Council meeting on Monday

Pending City Council approval, the Conover Fire Department has been awarded a two-year grant for $226,434. The grant is a SAFER grant awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security which will provide the salary and benefits for three full-time firefighter positions for the two-year span.

Duncan replaces Brewer as BOE director

Amanda Duncan, a Catawba County native who has worked in the Catawba County Elections Office since 2007, has been appointed by the Catawba County Board of Elections to serve as the county’s new Director of Elections. 

Duncan, who will start her new duties on March 3, succeeds Larry Brewer, who retired on Feb. 28 after serving as Director of Elections since April 2000.

Red Devils’ season ended at hands of Huskies

Newton-Conover and Hunter Huss laid it all on the line Friday night for a chance to reach Greensboro and the fourth round of the 2A boys basketball playoffs.

When the dust settled from the war on the court, the Huskies came away the victors, ending the Red Devils’ season with a 92-83 win on the road.

Newton-Conover finishes its season with a 23-6 overall record.

Easter scores 2,000th; Trojans return to Greensboro

It was a milestone night for both senior guard Ace Easter and the Bandys girls basketball team.

Easter scored her 2,000th career point, helping lead the Lady Trojans back to Greensboro for the fifth-straight year with an 87-61 victory against North Wilkes.

Allen Canrobert, 57, of Newton, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness. The Canrobert family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton-#828-464-1555.

Kelly Malton, age 48, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Business brought together at 2nd Annual meeting

The past, present and future of Newton’s business sector was showcased on Thursday at the Old Post Office Playhouse as part of the 2nd Annual Newton Business Meeting.

A total of 59 businesses at the event were honored and recognized. Each business was presented with a special certificate honoring them for being a part of the Newton community.

Elsie Roxann Elmore, 95, of Lincolnton, formerly of Newton, passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at Cardinal Health Care in Lincolnton. The Elmore family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

CVCC to name new school mascot

Catawba Valley Community College announced the “Our School, Our Brand” campaign this week in which a new mascot will be selected to represent CVCC.

The new brand at CVCC looks to embody all of the past and future success of CVCC and the Catawba Valley area through the naming of a new mascot.
