Maggie Pope Korn, 89, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2014 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. The Korn family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover.
The Honorable Clifton H. Smith was appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to fill the seat of the retiring 25th District Court Judge Suzanne Owsley.
Smith was sworn in by Chief District Court Judge Robert Brady in a ceremony on Friday at the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.
Not even the snow and ice could put out the fire in Newton.
City officials, along with the police and fire department personnel, were in attendance for Fridayâ€™sÂ groundbreaking ceremony for the new fire station headquarters.
Attorney David Learner has filed in Raleigh with the State Board of Elections as a candidate for District Attorney for Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties.
Known throughout the local criminal justice system, Learner has been a prosecutor and a trial attorney who has earned a reputation for honesty and integrity.
Winter weather this past week forced changes in the prep sports schedule.
Five regular season finales in boys basketball were postponed from Friday, including Bandys at Newton-Conover, Bunker Hill at West Caldwell, Hickory at Hibriten, Maiden at Lincolnton and St. Stephens at Fred T. Foard.
The 2A and 3A Western Regional wrestling tournaments take place Saturday.
The 2A event will be held at Owen High School in Black Mountain, while the 3A tournament will take place at North Gaston High.

Maggie Lois Pope Korn, age 89, formerly of Catawba, died on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. The family will receive friends following the service on Saturday at the church.
Both Catawba County and the city of Conover have issued States of Emergency following winter weather in the area.
Katherine "Kitty: Barnes, chair of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners, issued a State of Emergency for Catawba County as of 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
The city of Conover followed suit, declaring a State of Emergency as of 2:22pm on Wednesday.
