Behind Connor’s big night, Red Devils in SD-7 finals

Behind a stout performance both offensively and defensively, the Newton-Conover boys basketball team marched its way into the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A championship game.

The Red Devils led Bunker Hill by 14 points after the first quarter and coasted to a 76-40 victory against the Bears in the conference tournament semifinals Wednesday at CVCC’s Tarlton Complex.

Two-car crash ends with woman in hospital

Council approves grant agreement, contingency fund

Newton City Council's retreat has been anything, but a vacation.

The council was on retreat starting on Monday and ending today, discussing new ways to improve the city.

During the retreat, the council held its regularly scheduled meeting at a not-so familiar location — the Newton Expo.

Every player scores in round one win for Red Devils

With contributions from both its starting five and bench, the Newton-Conover boys basketball team advance in the SD-7 tournament.

The Red Devils defeated West Lincoln, 90-51, at home on Tuesday to move on to tonight’s round two at CVCC’s Tarlton Complex.

Dr. John C. James of Maiden, went to be with his heavenly father at Abernathy Laurels on Feb. 15, 2014. Goodin-Drum funeral home, of Maiden, is serving the James family.

Bobby Eugene Lail, age 75, of Conover, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Lail family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Newton native Becky McRee is home again and is married to a high school classmate. But during the years since their 1961 graduation, she lived in one of the world’s bloodiest war zones as the daughter-in-law of a Moslem sheikh and traveled the globe repeatedly.

Coulter appointed to replace Loudermelt

The Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education appointed a brand new member on Monday night.

The Board appointed Bernard Coulter to the vacant seat left by Scott Loudermelt, who resigned on Jan. 24 after serving for 10 years.

The Newton-Conover boys and Bandys girls basketball teams closed out regular season championship seasons on Monday with a pair of the victories.
