Man convicted in ‘Baker’s Dozen’ investigation

A man arrested in Catawba County late last year was charged on Wednesday in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

Dwayne Winfred Orders, as known as “the Comet,” was convicted of two felonies, including possess/distribute methamphetamine precurcsor chemicals and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

Newton City Council left with unfinished business

Tuesday night’s Newton City Council meeting saw the passing of three new ordinances, but it also left the council with one ruling left undecided on the table.

The city council decided to postpone a proposed ordinance that would have restrict yard sales. The ordinance would allow Newton residents to have three yard sales per year and each sale could only last within a 24-hour period.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Mike Houston bids adieu to program

Lenoir-Rhyne University head football coach Mike Houston is a winner.

In his first season leading the Bears football program, he brought home a South Atlantic Conference championship title and earned a berth to the playoffs — a first in 50 years.

After three successful seasons with the Bears, Houston is off to try and turn The Citadel into a winning program.

Finding her voice

Behind the closed doors of her own home, she was betrayed and molested. At only 13 years old, she was robbed of her innocence.

“I was scared. I was confused. I was very hurt and very angry,” Moose said. “It was someone that I was supposed to be able to trust — a family member.”

Maiden is a changed team from last season

Despite losing its head coach and leading scorer from a season ago, the Maiden girls basketball team is thriving.

The Lady Blue Devils have already exceeded their conference and overall win totals from a season ago.

Lenoir-Rhyne confirms Houston's departure as coach

Alma Elizabeth Seagle Reitzel, age 91, of Newton, passed away Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at Shannon Gray Nursing Home in Jamestown, N.C. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Reitzel family.

BREAKING: Houston resigns, heading for Citadel

Lenoir-Rhyne head football coach Mike Houston has resigned from his position.

Houston's resignation comes on the heels of a Monday meeting with The Citadel for the school's opening for a head football coach.

Houston led Lenoir-Rhyne to a 13-2 record this past season, guiding the Bears to a National Championship game appearance — their first since 1962 and first-ever in NCAA Div. II.

Indian swimmers win boys, girls county titles again

HICKORY — For the third-straight year, the St. Stephens swim program can boast its the best in Catawba County.

The Indians swept the boys and girls team titles at Tuesday’s fourth annual Catawba County Swimming Championships — the third in as many years that they’ve done so.
