Victoria Villas is changing its course

Victoria Villas is heading in a new direction.

No longer will they be an assisted living center, but instead a non-medical lodging or retirement center.

Owner and Manager Rita Robbins explained the switch, which is to help people who would have lost their benefits through the changes in Medicare and Medicaid.

Woman convicted of felony robbery, burglary

Chelsey Anita Shew, 26, of Lenoir, was convicted of felony robbery with a dangerous Weapon and felony first degree burglary this week in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

The defendant was sentenced to no less than 51 months and no more than 74 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.

Man convicted of felony breaking and entering

Joseph Randy Lee Sheffield, 28, of Connelly Springs, was convicted of felony breaking and entering (five counts) and felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle (six counts) this week in Burke County Criminal Superior Court.

The defendant was sentenced to no less than 30 months and no more than 63 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.

Tyoun Shuford's last-second trey tops Mustangs

All three of the losses for the Newton-Conover boys basketball team so far this season had come down to the wire.

Only fitting that the Red Devils would catch a break on their fourth try — this time against East Lincoln.

Tyoun Shuford made a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left, lifting the Red Devils at home past the unbeaten Mustangs on Friday.

Lady Trojans take sole possession of first place

The Bandys girls basketball team defeated Maiden on Friday night, 67-37, to take sole possession of first place in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A standings.
