Saint tries to continue solid play, win first state title

The St. Stephens girls soccer team competes on Saturday for a chance to win the program’s first state championship.

The Indians have won only four state titles in school history, including three in baseball (1971-73) and one in cheerleading (1987).

The wrestling team also finished as state runner-up in 2001.

Lady Indians forward Hall uses injury as motivation

St. Stephens junior defender Amanda Hall is making up for lost time after suffering a grade two strained MCL in her left knee earlier this season.

Hall suffered the injury in a game at Alexander Central on March 28.

Two sets of sisters on the St. Stephens girls soccer team are helping to build a special family atmosphere for the Lady Indians.

Caroline and Olivia Holmes, and Taylor and Jordan Black are two pairs of siblings on the squad.

Bandys' Medlin invited to National Super Combine

Bandys linebacker Colton Medlin has been invited to the Blue-Grey National Super Combine.

Medlin, a rising senior, will participate in the event on June 8-9 at the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots — Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

Denny Hamlin wins the pole for the Coca-Cola 600

After suffering a compression fracture in his back earlier this season and spending six weeks out of action, Denny Hamlin is finally back on track.

Hamlin turned a lap of 27.604 (195.624 mph) to win the pole for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Hamlin finished second in his first full race back two weeks ago at Darlington Raceway in the Southern 500.

Norma Jean Hollar Pharr, 87, of Claremont, went home to be with her Lord and beloved husband, Mitch, on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at her residence. The Pharr family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.

Meth arrest made in Claremont

On Wednesday, May 22, investigators from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, working in conjunction with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, traveled to the residence of 2596 Midnight Drive in Claremont regarding tip information of a possible meth lab.

Conover dedicates new park

The city of Conover is inviting the public to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new city park today at 1 p.m.

The opening of the new 6.5 acre park will result in a 50 percent increase in Conover’s public park system.

Vaughan hopes to re-build Maiden girls hoops

With 31 losing seasons in 35 years, the expectation level for the Maiden girls basketball program hasn’t been very high.

Its new coach is hoping to change that mentality.

Amber Vaughan was announced on Wednesday as the new head coach of the Lady Blue Devils basketball program.
