Born into a family of race car drivers, Zach Jarrett is using another sports pedigree to try to drive his own destiny.

The 6-foot-5 third baseman for Hickory High School is focused on finishing his senior season and gearing up for college.

Carolina Panthers preseason schedule released

April 4, 2013

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers will visit the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens for a nationally televised preseason game Aug. 22, the NFL announced.

The Panthers open the preseason against at home against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 9.

The next two games are on the road — Aug. 15 at the Philadelphia Eagles followed by the game at Baltimore which will be televised by ESPN.

Hildebran man arrested for meth

Steven Dewayne Icard, 37, of Hildebran was arrested Wednesday, April 3 for Felony Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Felony Conspire Manufacture Methamphetamine and Felony Possession/Distribution Meth Precursor. Catawba County Sheriff’s Office was able to make the arrest after finding warrants for Icard that span back to a case in 2011.

A brighter Newton

During the past couple of months, the city of Newton has been installing new LED street lights in the downtown area. Replacement of the existing lights will continue each year until all street lights have been switched out.

Church shows signs of spring

Maiden’s United Memorial Church of Christ displays the cross that was decorated by the congregation after the Sunday worship service for Easter. The church was built in 1887.

Ragsdale takes over 'Dads heading into 21st season

The Hickory Crawdads enter the 2013 season tonight under brand new management.

Corey Ragsdale takes over the reigns from former skipper Bill Richardson —the all-time winningest manager in team history.

Ragsdale, a former player for the New York Mets (2001-07) and Texas Rangers (2008-09) organizations, returns to the Hickory — the last ball club he ever suited up for.

Indians blank Warriors, win their third Classic title

With a shutout performance on the mound from Greg Lucas, the St. Stephens baseball team captured its third Easter Baseball Classic title on Wednesday.

The Indians (9-4) blanked West Caldwell, 4-0, to win their first Classic title since 2009 and third in the past 11 years (2002). 

Bobcats overcome early deficit, 76ers in 88-83 victory

Trailing by as many as 16 points, the Charlotte Bobcats exploded in the second half to come away with an 88-83 victory at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.

Gerald Henderson continued his torrid play of late with 24 points, while Kemba Walker (17 points, 10 assists) and Josh McRoberts (12 points, 16 rebounds) each record double doubles in the win.
