Five people, including two men from the Newton area, were arrested Saturday just minutes after they broke into a home in the 700 block of South Grove Street Extension in Lincolnton.

Barton's 3 hits, 4 RBIs paces Hickory past Hammond

Hickory heads into nearly a week-long break from American Legion baseball competition with a full head of steam.

Post 48 tallied 12 hits on Sunday — three of them off of the bat of catcher Luke Barton — in a 9-0 six-inning victory against Hammond Post 3.

Hill finishes college career as 10-time All-American

Former Hickory High and current N.C. State track and field standout Ryan Hill ended his collegiate career on Saturday.

Hill finished in ninth place in the 1,500-meter final during Saturday's NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Kelly's two HRs lifts Hickory past Kings Mountain

Kyle Kelly made the best of his first appearance at the plate for Post 48 on Saturday.

Kelly connected on two home runs in his five at bats of the season against Kings Mountain, helping lead Hickory to a 8-4 road victory.

Entering Saturday, Kelly had played in three games — all on the mound as a pitcher.

Post 48 picks up rain-shortened win versus Post 455

June 7, 2013

Hickory Post 48 arrived at Henkel-Alley Field on Friday expecting to play a doubleheader against Lincoln County Post 455.

What it got wasn’t anywhere close to that.

Post 48 picked up 7-6 victory against the Cardinals in a rain-shortened 4 1/2 inning game.

The second contest between the two teams was rained out.No make up date for the game was announced.

Former Hickory standout Hill chasing an NCAA title

Former Hickory High and current N.C. State track and field standout Ryan Hill will be chasing history on Saturday.

Hill will be racing in the 1,500-meter run final on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. for a chance to win his 10th All-American award and an NCAA championship.

Hill qualified for the finals by finishing fifth in the first of two semifinal heats on Thursday.

Newton man charged with assault on teen

A Newton man has been charged with soliciting and sexually assaulting a Taylorsville teen in a case being investigated by the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. 

Catawba County Public Health receives Star award

As part of its safety recognition program, the N.C. Department of Labor certified Catawba County Public Health as a Carolina Star site. State Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry attended a ceremony at Public Health on Thursday, June 6 to present employees with a certificate and the Carolina Star flag.

Founder and CEO of Sarstedt remembered by Newton facility

Walter Sarstedt, 77,  of Nümbrecht, Germany passed away May 17,  after a short period of declining health.
Sarstedt was an engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, teacher, mentor and visionary leader.
