Henry Lee Fox, 68, of Conover died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 as the result of a traffic accident. The Fox/McGee family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Wa. at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.

Woman arrested for murder

Catawba County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alyshia Rachell Wilson, 28, of 2683 JB Rd. in Claremont for one count Felony Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter and one count Felony Conspire to Murder.

Conover cleans up after storm

A fast moving powerful storm struck Conover Thursday afternoon and left a trail of damage across the city.

“As of noon today [Friday] we have collected more than 50 tons of debris since clean up efforts began yesterday,” Conover City Manager Donald Duncan said.

Cowboys teams competing in Superbowl on Saturday

The Conover Cowboys youth football organization is competing for titles on Saturday.

The Cowboys varsity, junior varsity and mighty mites teams play Saturday at Rocky River High School in Mint Hill to try and win a trio of National Spring Youth Football League (NSYFL) championships.

Bobbie Jane Setzer, 74 of Catawba passed away Wednesday June 12, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Bobbie was born in Catawba County April 17, 1939 to the late Jewel Clyde Eastridge Abernathy. The Setzer family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton.

Two Hickory men convicted

Two Hickory men were convicted of unrelated child sex cases in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court this week.

One incident occurred in Newton and the other was in the county.

The first case involved David Allen Hefner, 29, of Hickory, who was convicted of three counts Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child.

Public hearings to be held

June 13, 2013

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold three public hearings during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Monday, June 17, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Ave. in Newton.

Flags will be flapping in a warm stiff breeze today as the United States celebrates Flag Day.

Flag day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on this day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Barn gone in seconds

A barn was destroyed Thursday afternoon on Rhoney Farm Road in the Cooksville community.

A passerby reported to 9-1-1 that there was a barn on fire and heavy smoke coming from it at 4328 Rhoney Farm Rd. a little after 12:30 p.m.
