Mike Houston, current head football coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University, and former L-R head football coach Fred Goldsmith will be at The Crossing at Hollar Mill in Hickory on Monday from 6–8 p.m.

Nora Faye Hamilton Duncan, age 64, of Newton died Tuesday Dec. 3, 2013 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church General Fund.

Robert Lee Bolliger, 90, of Conover died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at Conover Nursing Home & Rehab. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

PREP FOOTBALL 42 county athletes honored

The Northwestern 3A/4A and Southern District 7 Athletic 2A conferences announced their honors for the 2013-14 prep football season.

A total of 42 Catawba County athletes, including 24 in the SD-7 and 18 in the Northwestern 3A/4A, were awarded.

An altercation between customers in a store over bargain clothes results in a call to Newton Police Department.

The officer arrives to find that the instigators have left and the disruption was minor.

After talking with the store manager, she returns to her police car and files a description of the incident.

Local program in 3 counties helping brighten holidays

This season, holiday shoppers in Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties can give cheer to area seniors by participating in the Be a Santa to a Senior program.

The program — run by the local Home Instead Senior Care office in partnership with area retailers, volunteers and members of the community — helps ensure isolated seniors receive gifts and companionship during the holidays.
