Junius Robert Gaither, Jr. (Bob), 90, of Newton, passed away at home early Sunday morning June 23, 2013. The Gaither family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Patrol seeks witnesses

June 24, 2013

The driver of an all-terrain vehicle died after an early morning accident Monday in Catawba County.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. Monday along Slanting Bridge Road about a half mile south of the bridge near Tradewinds Drive.

N.C. Highway Patrol officials said the rider, 30-year-old Joseph Hall, was not wearing a helmet.

No one else was injured in the crash.

16 hits pace Hickory in 13-9 win against Cherryville

Tied 9-9 in the middle of the sixth inning, Hickory Post 48 scored four runs in the game’s final 3.5 innings to come away with a 13-9 victory against Cherryville on Friday night.

Jimmy Lowell Campbell, 84, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. The Campbell family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Conover man arrested for sex crimes

Hickory police arrested a Conover man for child sex crimes Wednesday.

Edmundo Teodulo Bello-Gomez, 48, of 2674 10th Ave. Lane NE was charged with one count of felony attempted first-degree rape and three counts of felony indecent liberties with children.

The crimes happened in Hickory.

Boileau is sitting pretty

She did not win the state lottery nor is she dancing or singing on a TV show, but Suzy Nadeau Boileau has designed a decorative chair which was recently selected for the Executive Mansion in Raleigh.

Williams, Brinson both homer in Crawdads' victory

Nick Williams and Lewis Brinson both went yard on Thursday, helping the Hickory Crawdads start the second half of their season with a 7-0 win against the visiting Greensboro Grasshoppers.

The 'Dads and 'Hoppers play game two of the series today at 7 p.m.

Bandys' Hunter Harvey agrees to terms with Orioles

Bandys High School pitcher Hunter Harvey has agreed to terms the Baltimore Orioles, according to an industry source.

Harvey, who stands 6-foot-3 and weights 178 pounds, is expected to sign his contract with the Orioles on Tuesday after he passes a physical, which is scheduled for Monday.
