Area IV playoff brackets are officially released

Mildred “Millie” Little Bauguess, 80, of Claremont, passed away, Monday, July 1, 2013, at Catawba Valley Assisted Living at Rock Barn in Claremont. The Bauguess family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.

Expanded recycling starts this week

Catawba County has expanded its residential recycling program to include a permanent electronics and paint collection area at the Blackburn Landfill.

This service is available year round during regular Landfill operating hours.

Mark Story won’t return to coach Lady Trojans

Mark Story was coaching the Bandys girls basketball team during a tournament last week at Freedom High School.

Little did he know at the time it would be his last act as Lady Trojans coach.

Story will not return this winter to coach the Bandys girls basketball team after being hired by Catawba County Schools to be its new Career and Technical Education (CTE) director.

Hickory tallies 13 hits in victory against Shelby

Hickory head coach Fore Rembert shook up his line up Thursday, and Post 48 responded by shaking up the Area IV West standings.

Tallying 13 hits, Post 48 knocked off Shelby 8-5 in its home regular season finale at Henkel-Alley Field against Post 82.

Bobcats draft Indiana's Cody Zeller with No. 4 pick

The Charlotte Bobcats added a big man it desperately needed during Thursday’s NBA Draft.

The Bobcats took 7-foot University of Indiana power forward Cody Zeller with the fourth overall pick during the draft.

Charlotte was one of the teams that Zeller wanted to be chosen by.

Hickory's Gallo, Alfaro selected to MLB Futures Game

A pair of Hickory Crawdads will represent the Texas Rangers organization on a big stage July 14.

Third baseman Joey Gallo and catcher Jorge Alfaro were both selected to the 2013 Major League Baseball Futures Game at Citi Stadium in New York, N.Y.

The game is part of MLB’s All-Star festivities, which includes the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.
