This week as the nation this week observes the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, Catawbans remember local soldiers who fought in the Confederate army in that historic Civil War confrontation.

Hickory Post 48's playoff opener postponed yet again

Hickory Post 48’s first round Area IV playoff game against Kings Mountain Post 155 was rained out for the second-straight time on Thursday.

Post 48 (14-7, 10-6) and Post 155 (8-9, 8-7) will try to start the playoff series today at 7 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

The two teams have met in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

Post 48's playoff opener postponed to Thursday

Hickory Post 48's home Area IV playoff opener with Kings Mountain Post 155 has been postponed due to field conditions.

The game will be made up on Thursday at Henkel-Alley Field at 7 p.m.

For the second-straight season, Hickory Post 48 and Kings Mountain Post 155 meet in the first round of the Area IV playoffs.

The two teams play in a rematch of last year’s best-of-five playoff series starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field.

Red Devils make football coaching staff changes

The Newton-Conover football program made some major changes to its coaching staff entering this fall 2013 season.

Five assistant coaches under Brint Russell in 2012 will not return to the staff.

Due to recent events in North Carolina, approximately 70,000 citizens lost their unemployment benefits last week and about 500,000 citizens have been denied Medicaid benefits statewide.

Demolition of South Newton starts

Demolition crews began tearing down the South Newton Elementary School this week. The new elementary school is planned to open by the start of the 2014 school year. The original class rooms, cafeteria and gymnasium date back to 1958. Demolition is expected to be completed in a few weeks.

Hickory tries to carry momentum into Area IV playoffs

Hickory starts the American Legion Area IV playoffs on Wednesday in familiar territory.

Post 48 opens play as the No. 3 seed in the West against Kings Mountain, the East’s sixth-seeded squad.

Coaches from all across Area IV gathered on Monday evening in Cherryville to discuss this year's playoffs, including seeding and rules.

Four area prep coaches step down last last week
