Hickory QB Williams transfers to third county school

Matt Williams is making it three Catawba County high schools in as many years.

Williams, who played quarterback at Hickory High last season and for St. Stephens High the year prior, has transferred to Fred T. Foard High School for his senior season.

He follows current Foard coach Tom Harper from the Red Tornadoes to the Tigers.

Josh McRoberts re-signs with the Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats were busy signing players for the second-straight day on Friday.

Forward Josh McRoberts re-signed with Charlotte for a deal reportedly worth two years and $5.5 million.

McRoberts’ new contract also reportedly includes a second-year player option.

Efren Israel Carreon-Chavez, 33, of Catawba,  died Wednesday, July 3, at CMC-Charlotte as a result of an accident. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m., Monday, July 8, at Jenkins Funeral Home.

The Catawba County Board of Elections was a busy place Friday at lunch as the filing period for seats on local town and city councils started at noon. The filing period ends at noon July 19.

‘State of Emergency’ declared in county

Catawba County Board of Commissioners Chair Katherine W. Barnes declared a State of Emergency for Catawba County at 12 p.m. on Friday, July 5, in response to serious flooding in several areas of the county.

49er athletes use sports and faith as a platform

Before embarking on the first-ever season of football at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a pair of Catawba County natives and former prep standouts gave back to those less fortunate.

Matt Johnson and Zach Bumgarner both traveled to the small town of Tecate, Mexico for a mission trip during the end of June.

Tigers attempting to replace 5 coaches in 3 sports

Center Al Jefferson signs with Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats made a dip in free agency on Thursday, signing former Utah Jazz center Al Jefferson.

The deal for Jefferson is reportedly for three years and $41 million. He is the first free agent from another NBA team to sign with the Bobcats this offseason.

Torray Cornwell, 36, of Conover died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at his residence. A Memorial Service for Torray Cornwell will be Saturday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at Thomas Chapel AME Zion Church in Conover.

Maiden parade full of smiles

Maiden’s eighth annual Fourth of July “Edith Pirkle Parade” was a huge success  Thursday morning even with the threat of rain.
