Allison’s arm helps Hickory tie series with Gaston

On just a few days rest, Colton Allison had the best pitching performance of his entire American Legion baseball career on Thursday.

The former St. Stephens and current CVCC pitcher tossed a three-hit shutout, helping Hickory pick up a 2-0 game two victory against Gaston at Henkel-Alley Field.

With the victory, Post 48 (18-8) ties its series with the Braves at one game apiece.

Hunter Harvey debuting for GCL Orioles on July 19

Former Bandys High pitcher Hunter Harvey will make his anticipated pro debut next week with the Gulf Coast Orioles.

Harvey, who was drafted with the 22nd pitch in the 2013 MLB Draft, will pitch against the Gulf Coast League Rays on July 19 in Sarasota, Fla. at 12 p.m.

County to award $2.3 million contract

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will award the bid for a new library when they meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.

Two Newton men sentenced in sperate drug cases

July 11, 2013

Brian Duane Martz, 34, of Newton, was convicted of Felony Possession of Cocaine,  two counts of Felony Attempted Larceny and two counts of Habitual Felon status this week in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court. The defendant was sentenced to no less than 52 months and no more than 88 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.

Brandes to retire from Social Services

Beth Brandes will retire as assistant director of Catawba County Social Services on July 31 following 25 years of service and a lifetime of advocacy for children and under-served populations.
