Hickory's C.J. Edwards part of trade to Chicago Cubs

Hickory Crawdads right-handed pitcher C.J. Edwards, above, was traded by the Texas Rangers along with fellow minor leaguers Mike Olt (Triple-A) and Justin Grimm (Class A) to the Chicago Cubs for right-handed pitcher Matt Garza on Monday night.

Edwards, who was scheduled to start for Hickory on Monday night against Charleston, was assigned to the Cubs High-A affiliate in Daytona, Fla.

Several new names added to prep football staffs

New additions to several Catawba County high school football coaching staffs were made on Monday.

These hires were made during Catawba County Schools July board meeting.

New Foard coach Tom Harper will retain most of the assistant coaches under former Tiger leader Jason Phelps, except for the addition of one new coach.

Catawba County Hornets dominant in season opener

July 23, 2013

The Catawba County Hornets rolled to a 33-6 victory against the Upstate Vikings in their season opener on Saturday in Gaffney, S.C.

Back up quarterback Jason Kennedy threw three touchdown passes in the game.

Kennedy replaced starter Brandon Streater in the first quarter after he was hurt on a kickoff.

Orioles' Hunter Harvey makes pro baseball debut

Former Bandys High School pitcher Hunter Harvey made his professional debut on Friday for the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

Harvey allowed one hit and struck out one batter in one inning on the mound against the Gulf Coast League Rays.

“It felt really good,” Harvey said. “They are taking it slow with me.”

Mary Smyre Link, 83, of Conover, went home to be with the Lord on July 19, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.  The Link family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

‘Baby Parade’ scheduled for Soldiers Reunion

“Good Luck to the USA,” the theme of the 124th annual Soldiers Reunion patriotic festival, will be carried out by the youngest generation of Catawbans when toddlers and tykes are spotlighted in their own parade on Courthouse Square in Newton on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Shelby wins game four to end Hickory's season

Sitting in the dugout, Post 48 head coach Fore Rembert could only watch on as his team's season came to a close.

Shelby pulled ahead by four runs early and held off a late rally by Hickory to win game four on Sunday, 5-3, at Henkel-Alley Field.

Post 82 (33-7) clinches the best-of-five third round playoff series, 3-1, and advances to the Area IV finals against Lincoln County (20-13).

Game four of Hickory-Shelby series postponed

The fourth playoff game between Hickory Post 48 and Shelby Post 82 on Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather.

The contest was moved to Sunday at 2 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

A fifth game, if necessary, would take place on Monday at Keeter Stadium in Shelby at 7 p.m.

Shelby uses 5-run eighth to edge Hickory in game 3

Hickory tied its third playoff game with Shelby with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

A half-inning later, it all unraveled at the seams.

Shelby scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to come away with a 10-5 victory and a 2-1 series advantage against Post 48.

Hickory (21-10) trailed 4-1 after six complete innings, but would rally starting in the seventh.
