Foard's Tom Harper returns to his coaching roots

Fred T. Foard first-year head football coach Tom Harper returned to his old stomping grounds on Tuesday for his team’s first preseason scrimmage.

The Tigers traveled to Alexander Central, where Harper coached from 2007-11. He led the Cougars to five playoff appearances in as many years during his time there.

The Cougars were 34-26 under Harper, including a 19-11 mark in league play.

Harold “Shorty” Edwards, age 80, of Sherrills Ford passed away Friday, August 9, 2013, at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Edwards family.

Hornets handle Nighthawks, improve to 3-0 on season

The Catawba County Hornets kept their perfect record intact on Saturday with a 28-6 win against the Triangle Nighthawks in Raleigh.

Catawba County (3-0) took an early lead when quarterback Brandon Streater connected with wide receiver Centrail Williamson on a 23-yard pass in the first quarter.

Desmond Burch added a two-point conversion run to make it 8-0.

Now, the 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker is in his fourth year of playing football for the Catawba County Hornets and hoping to have another chance to play at the next level.

'Dads Brinson named Rangers' Defender of the Month

Hickory Crawdads All-Star OF Lewis Brinson was named the Texas Rangers Minor League Defender of the Month for the month of July, becoming the 5th different Crawdad to win a monthly award in 2013.

Behind Norman, Panthers win preseason opener

Josh Norman might of had some rookie jitters in 2012, but he certainly showed none in Friday night's preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Norman, a Coastal Carolina product, intercepted two passes and returned one of them for a touchdown in the Panthers' 24-17 victory against the Bears at Bank of America Stadium.

Community bonds in 'Red and White' scrimmage

The rain held off Thursday and several hundred football fans turned out for Newton-Conover’s second annual “Red and White” intrasquad scrimmage.

The Newton-Conover varsity and junior varsity programs both played in two 10-minute quarters.

Points were given on offense for touchdowns (six), first downs (one) and plays of 30-plus yards (two).

'Dads INF Ryan Rua promoted to Double-A Frisco

Hickory Crawdads infielder Ryan Rua was promoted on Thursday to the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders.

Rua is the seventh Hickory player this season be called up.

He joins relief pitcher and former Hickory Crawdad Alexander Claudio as part of the RoughRiders.

The 23-year-old Rua led the South Atlantic League in home runs (29), RBIs (82) and extra-base hits (54) this season.
