New facility at CVCC is officially dedicated

HICKORY — Catawba Valley Community College continued its growth on Thursday, dedicating the new Corporate Development Center.

“When we look at today’s environment, we all have to think differently,” said CVCC President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw. “If we aren’t thinking differently and working differently, we are going to be left behind.”

Stedman, Lawing make history in the city of Newton

NEWTON — After electing a new Mayor pro tem during Tuesday night’s council meeting, the city of Newton made history.

For the first time ever, Newton’s mayor and mayor pro tem are both women.

Mayfield mansion will be set ablaze Saturday

A 12,000-square foot mansion that used to belong to former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield will be set on fire Saturday morning.

The mansion, which was built close to 20 years ago, is part of a 444.77-acre property on six tracts in Catawba.

The house includes seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

Four men are convicted in shooting

Four men were convicted this week in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court for their involvement in a shooting incident.

Among those convicted were Jamar Monte James, 32, of Claremont; Marcus Tyrone Kennedy, 31, of Conover; Terrell Lee Mitchell, 24, of Hickory; and Jordon Olajuwon Ramseur, 27, of Conover.

Almost 60 apply for Red Devils coaching position

A little more than a month after Brint Russell resigned as head coach football coach at Newton-Conover High School, progress is being made to replace him.

According to Newton-Conover High School officials, just under 60 persons have applied for the Red Devils vacant position.

Tigers, Trojans face off on the wrestling mat

Fred T. Foard and Bandys high schools competed in a tri-match on the mat Wednesday in Newton.

The Tigers and Trojans also competed against the Mooresville Blue Devils at the match.

Daniel “Danny” Allen Ratchford, age 45, of Catawba passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at his residence. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Ratchford family.
