A lucky lottery ticket sold in Catawba County won $1 million in Saturday’s Powerball drawing. The ticket, which beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls drawn, was sold at Kangaroo Express #3026 on N.C. 10 West in Newton. The numbers for the white balls were 12-17-45-54-58.
ARTfest 2013 was over almost before it started as heavy rains drove away both participants and attendees only an hour into Saturday’s event in downtown Newton. But those who made it out to the event ahead of the weather encountered a range of activities, foods, crafts, storytellers and musicians.
NEWTON â€” Newton-Conover's Franklin Wepner entered Monday's SD-7 soccer game against Bunker Hill with a sick feeling in his stomach.
He left it with an appetite for scoring.
Wepner netted four goals against the Bears, including two in each half, to help the Red Devils earn a 4-2 conference victory at Gurley Stadium.

The Maiden defense forced three South Caldwell turnovers in a 38-14 victory against the Spartans in Lenoir on Friday.
Maiden improves to 4-0 on the season, while South Caldwell falls to 2-2 overall.

Behind the play of quarterback Landon Hammer, the Alexander Central football team made it two wins in as many weeks against Catawba County squads.
Hammer scored three touchdowns to lead the Cougars past its former conference mate St. Stephens, 49-14, in Taylorsville.
The Indians fall to 0-4 overall on the season.
