Wilson making impact after time away from football

Until this season, J’len Wilson hadn’t played a competitive snap of football since middle school.

The Bunker Hill junior made a return this fall to the gridiron, where he is making an impact on the Bears squad.

Mary Elizabeth Cooke Campbell, 78, of Newton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, September, 28, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Campbell family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton, NC.

Artisans return to Murray’s Mill

Pumpkin carver Tim Trudgeon is especially busy in September and October. After hand-carving a trailer full of pumpkins at different events across the state, he drives to his home in Mocksville, and loads up the trailer again.

This weekend he was headed to Murray’s Mill in Catawba to demonstrate his craft.

Racing through town

Cyclists riding in the Cycle North Carolina Mountains to the Coast ride travel through Newton on Monday on their way to Murray's Mill. The ride, from Sept. 28 through Oct. 5, stretches 478 miles from Spruce Pine to Atlantic Beach. The cyclists will travel an average of 60-80 miles a day during the ride.

CLAREMONT — Maiden's football game on Friday night against Bunker Hill wasn't pretty, but it was effective.

The Blue Devils (5-0, 1-0) were able to overcome several miscues to come way with a 38-17 SD-7 win against the Bears.

Baker, Red Devils whip Warriors in SD-7 opener

NEWTON — Nick Baker scored three touchdowns on the ground to lead Newton-Conover past West Caldwell, 47-7.

Baker, who returned from an ankle injury, tallied 133 yards on nine carries.
