Focus on luring high-paying jobs

City Council members in Conover acted unanimously this week on two initiatives intended to bring jobs to the area.

One action sets up an agreement to cooperate with Catawba Valley Community College in a program to encourage entrepreneurs.

The other measure offers incentives to existing industry HSM to bring in additional jobs at a very high rate of pay.

SD-7 tennis tournament kicks off its first day

MAIDEN — Competition at the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tennis tournament officially kicked off on Tuesday.

Berths in the 2A West Regional tennis tournament are up for grabs at the event.

Carolina Panthers cut former ASU standout Edwards

Armanti Edwards’ career as a Carolina Panther is over.

Edwards was waived by the Panthers on Tuesday, ending a three-year tenure with the team that drafted him back in 2010.

Originally a quarterback at Appalachian State, Edwards was converted to a wide receiver by the Panthers after they drafted him with the 89th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
