Panthers cut LB Anderson, re-sign TE Hartsock

The Carolina Panthers were busy during the first day of the NFL's free agency period on Tuesday.

The team released starting linebacker James Anderson and re-signing tight end Ben Hartsock.

Anderson had spent his entire NFL career with the Panthers after being drafted in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft by Carolina.

Troy Edward Noah, 68, of Conover, surrounded by his family, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. The Noah family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Volunteers needed for special event

The Catawba Valley Special Olympics are seeking volunteers for the Spring Track and Field Games on Friday, April 26, at Newton-Conover High School.

Volunteers are essential for a successful event and will help with the hundreds of athletes that are competing in the various events.

Blue Devils beat Bears, tune up for N-C showdown

Jon Huffman said his team's play wasn't pretty, but it was enough to get the job done.

The Maiden boys tennis team won four singles matches and two doubles contest to defeat Bunker Hill 6-3 on Monday.

Small fire no match

A small neighborhood crowd gathered to watch the Newton Fire Department quickly control an apartment fire Friday, March 8, at 115 East Thirteenth Street.

The occupants were cooking and accidentally started a fire that damaged the kitchen cabinets, the wall and the ceiling according to fire officials.
