Bears beat Red Devils in SD-7 tournament final

NEWTON — Bunker Hill and Newton-Conover had met twice on the volleyball court this season, each earning a victory.

The two teams met again on Tuesday — this time with the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tournament title on the line.

The Lady Bears (19-6) won the “rubber match” between the two schools in four sets to claim the 2013 SD-7 conference tournament championship.

GHKC NOTEBOOK: Team Ned Jarrett wins Shootout

Members of Team Ned Jarrett were victorious during Tuesday's Dale Jarrett Shootout — part of the Greater Hickory Kia Classic week.

Winning team members include Ned Jarrett, Mark Talley, Bunker Hill High School golfer Jacob Lail and pro Ted Schultz.

In the nine-hole event, Lail drained a 20-foot eagle putt to give his team the winning 9-under-par score.

Sadie Ruth Lail Arndt 85 of Conover passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The Arndt family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee, 828-465-2111

Henry Dale Sigmon, age 82, of Denver (Pumpkin Center) left his earthly life and ascended to the Father on Sunday, October 13, 2013.E. F. Drum Funeral Home is serving the Sigmon family.

Oktoberfest crafting

Woodworker James Hamrick of Hamrick Woodwright, teaches local children about old time toy making at Oktoberfest. Hamrick and his father, Eddie Hamrick, demonstrated local craftsmanship along with several other artisans from around the area under the sails in downtown Hickory this weekend as part of the festivities.

Hefner becomes for N-C golfer to win H.S. Classic

It's been a good year for Alex Hefner to say the least.

The Newton-Conover golfer added a title at the 10th Greater Hickory High School Classic on Monday to his already impressive amount of accolades.

Lady Bears, Red Devils both advance to SD-7 final

The Bunker Hill and Newton-Conover volleyball teams both picked up semifinal wins in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tournament on Monday.

The two teams meet in today's final, which takes place at 5 p.m. at N-CHS.
