The fourth annual Yancey County Dream Home Tour, benefitting Mayland Community College, takes place Saturday, Oct. 12.
The event features showcase homes in and around Burnsville, and coincides with the fall foliage season in the mountains of Yancey County.
Charlcie Lucille Brown Teague, age 77, of Claremont passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at her residence. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Teague family.
Sadie Ruth Lail Arndt, 85, of Conover died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Catawba County Animal Shelter is recognizing Adopt A Shelter Dog Month this October by offering half price adoptions through Oct. 19.
Joe Goble just celebrated his 99th birthday. Born in 1914, heâ€™s seen both world wars, the Great Depression and the invention of Internet. Goble remembers his first job, hitchhiking five miles to work for a dollar a day in Statesville.
He recalls driving across the country to find work in California but returning to see about a beautiful girl, whom he later married, in North Carolina.
After a difficult loss to rival Maiden last week on the road, the Newton-Conover football team tries to regain momentum when it hosts West Lincoln tonight.

Richard â€śDickâ€ť Henry Wyatt, age 76, of Newton, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at his residence. Born March 7, 1937, in Clarksville, TN, he was the son of the late Lucian Henry and Francis Moore Wyatt. The Wyatt family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
