Man charged in sexual assault on teen

A Southeast Catawba County man faces child sexual assault and kidnapping charges after being arrested by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
Matthew Dylan Miller, 22, of 2434 Wellesbourne Lane, Sherrills Ford was arrested Wednesday and charged with one felony county each of taking indecent liberties with a child and second-degree kidnapping, according to a statement from the Sheriff's

Making way for the new

Demolition was underway Thursday morning at the corner of N.C. 10 and Brady Avenue in Newton. The city of Newton recently acquired a group of buildngs in this area and has plans for the property that include new fire facilities. A crew from the D.H. Griffin Company drove the heavy equipment that stripped away parts of the old building and deposited them in a heap nearby.

Historical association presents ‘Haunted History’

The city of Newton, the Catawba County Historical Association, along with the help of Once Upon A Time children’s book store in Newton and the city of Newton Festival and Events Committee, are proud to announce the return of Cynthia Moore Brown for “Haunted History,” Saturday, Oct. 26. The spooky storytelling event is scheduled from 5-8 p.m.

Police officers recovering after injuries in chase

CLAREMONT — One Claremont police officer is suffering bruises while another was seeing a specialist Wednesday after the two men were injured during a chase Tuesday evening.

The chase began as a routine traffic stop for stolen tags near the intersection of Cobbs Drive and North Lookout Street.

Police charge suspect in gas station hold-up

NEWTON — Newton Police have charged a Maiden man with holding up the Hess-Wilco gas station/convenience store on U.S. 321-Business in Newton, and firing shots at a witness' vehicle.

Dimitris Rashawn Williams, 21, of 307 S. D. Ave. in Maiden, was taken into custody Wednesday, according to multiple sources.

Williams faces several sets of charges in the incident, according to county records.
