William Morgan Barnett, Jr., 81, passed away March 27, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Barnett family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home in Hickory.
Glen Oaks Golf Club members were devastated when they woke and found their club house was destroyed during an early morning fire on Sunday, Feb. 24.
A month later, the course is still in business, but one clubhouse short. Glen Oaks General Manager Dennis Henry said the golf course plans to build back in the same location and predicts a year time frame.

Maiden baseball player Randal Ortiz is living the American dream and playing the sport he loves after spending the first 16 years of his life in Puerto Rico.
Ortiz grew up in Bayamon — the second-largest city in Puerto Rico with more than 200,000 residents.
He started playing baseball at age 4 and was instantly drawn to the game.

Thomas Wayne “Sid” Coulter, 66, of Newton died Monday, March 25, 2013 at his residence. The Coulter family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
